Q and A with Rock Photographer: Bob Gruen: Here
You toured with Green Day last year. What was that like?
Bob Gruen: Oh yeah, I really have a lot of fun with those guys, they are among the funniest people I know. They're constantly cracking each other up. They're great. They're one of the best band's I've hung out with, and I really enjoy their music and I really enjoy them. They're punks, they've got a real great attitude. You know that Walmart is one of the biggest sellers [of CDs] -- I think Walmart sells about half the CDs and albums in the U.S., and they're very strict about the language on CDs. Some bands will change the lyrics so that Walmart will carry their record. When their last record came out, Green Day refused to change their lyrics, and Walmart wouldn't carry the album. When they asked Billie Joe how he felt about that, he said, "Well if they think it's dangerous why don't they just move it out of the record department and sell it over by the guns and knives and the other dangerous things they sell." That's the reason I like Green Day. They just have common sense and a good sense of humor.

Saggy pants cost Green Day singer his airline seat @ USA Today: HERE
OAKLAND (APOnline) - Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong says his sagging pants cost him a seat on a Southwest Airlines flight.
The singer-guitarist for the San Francisco Bay area band sent a message to his Twitter followers on Thursday expressing his indignation at being tossed from an Oakland-to-Burbank flight for wearing his trousers too low.
"Just got kicked off a southwest flight because my pants sagged too low! What the f***? No joke!" he wrote.
An ABC7 news producer who was on the same flight told the station that a flight attendant approached Armstrong as the plane was getting ready to take off and asked him to hike his pants higher. The producer, Cindy Qiu, says Armstrong initially responded by asking the attendant if there weren't "better things to do than worry about that?"
But the attendant persisted and told Armstrong he could be ejected for his refusal to comply. When Armstrong insisted he was just trying to get to his seat, he and a traveling companion were taken off the plane.
Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins released a statement saying Armstrong was allowed onto the next flight to Burbank and had told a customer relations agent who contacted him he had no further complaints.
"As soon as we became aware of what had happened, we reached out to apologize for this Customer's experience," the statement read. "He elected to take the next flight. We followed up with this Customer and involved Employees to get more details and, in our latest conversations, understand from the Customer the situation was resolved to his satisfaction."

P.S. here are the lyrics for The new song Amy...
Amy
Is your heart singing out of tune
Are your eyes just singing the blues
Dirty records from another time
Some blood stains on your shoes
No one really knows about your soul
And I barely even know your name
Burning rhythms and posting lies
For a bunch of fools drown in shame
Amy don't you go
I want you around
Singin' woah please don't go
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Did you tattoo a lucky charm
To keep you out of harms way?
Warding off all evil signs
But it never really kept you safe
You're too young for the golden age
Cause the record bin's been replaced
27 gone without a trace
And you walked away from your drink
Is your heart singing out of tune
Are you eyes just singing the blues?
Dirty records from another time
Some blood stains on your shoes
May I have this last dance
By chance if we should meet?
Can you write me a lullaby?
So we can sing you to sleep

Meet Green Day: The Next Generation. Emily's Army, a new band comprised entirely of teenagers from Oakland, California, keep the sound of Green Day's California pop-punk roots alive on their debut album Don't Be A Dick. The musical connection to Green Day goes beyond musical influence - the band just happens to include Billie Joe Armstong's son Joey on drums, and the Green Day frontman produced their record. "Broadcast This," the band's first video, shows the boyish rockers ripping through a tune that declares their boredom with all of the music that they hear on their radio. Except for Green Day, of course. Those guys rule.

Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions Announces Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods,' Mattel's 'Major Matt Mason,' Green Day's 'American Idiot' (Exclusive)
After the gods and the space adventurer comes the idiot. Besides American Gods, Playtone is also developing American Idiot, a screen version of the Broadway musical adapted from Green Day's eponymous concept album, for 2013 premiere.
Director Michael Mayer of the stage version will direct the movie, while Billy Joe Armstrong will reprise his Broadway role as St. Jimmy in the movie version. The adaptation is Playtone's second musical after the blockbuster hit, Mamma Mia!, which grossed over $600 million worldwide.
"Mamma Mia! proved that if the musical is right, obviously it can go into the stratosphere, as far as box office gross. We're always looking for musicals," said Goetzman, whose company also owns the films rights of Spring Awakenings, which the partners are planning to produce in an independent way.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has already influenced and turned on a new generation of teenagers to punk, and now he's doing the same for Generation Y.
Emily's Army, a pop-punk group made up of four Bay Area teenagers, is set to blow up with the June 14 release of their debut album, Don't Be A D***. On the drums: Armstrong's 16-year-old son Joey. Side note: A 16-year-old rocks harder than you. Deal with that.
But Billie Joe's hardly just attaching his name to a vanity project. He produced the 14-song album, a mix of proto-punk, pop-punk and garage rock, and is releasing it on his own Adeline Records. (Coolest. Dad. Ever.) Expect to hear a mix of politically conscious and personal lyrics, with the group -- made up of brothers Max and Cole Becker, Joey Armstrong and Travis Neumann -- presumably taking a few pointers from the king of pop-punk himself.
Emily's Army range in age from 15 to 17 -- the perfect age to be starting a punk band -- but have already spent the past two years touring up and down the West Coast. Once known as Raining Souls, the group took their name Emily's Army from the Cystic Fibrosis fund-raising organization as a way to honor the Becker brothers' 15-year-old cousin Emily, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1998.

The smash-hit, Tony Award®-winning AMERICAN IDIOT is Broadway's most exciting new musical. The New York Times calls it, "thrilling and emotionally charged, as moving as anything on Broadway!" Based on Green Day's Grammy® Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the smash hits "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Holiday" and "21 Guns", AMERICAN IDIOT is the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Their search for meaning in a post 9-11 world leads them on the most exhilarating journey of the Broadway season. This amazing show just closed on April 24. The cast and crew has generously donated some one-of-a-kind items to Broadway Cares.. The cast and crew has generously donated some one-of-a-kind items to Broadway Cares. These white size 7 Creepers were part of the original costume design and were worn onstage by Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong during technical rehearsals for his original run as "St. Jimmy" in January 2011. Monay, May 4th, 2011Osama Bin Laden Death Sparks Reactions From Chuck D, Green Day, Flaming Lips
Much like the rest of us, musicians around the world have spoken out via Twitter after news broke last night regarding the death of terrorist Osama Bin Laden. Some responded in a light-hearted fashion while others tweeted more thoughtful, critical comments.
"Good news everyone, Osama Bin Laden the terrorist is dead," F---ed Up's Damian Abraham wrote via Twitter this morning. "The bad news however is that Osama Bin Laden the martyr has been born."
Rapper Chuck D wrote several posts regarding the news. "USA is at it again, number one in the rankings of Killing Championships," he said via Twitter. "Stealing the Gold in the Murder Olympics and the crowd goes wild!" The rapper later added, "One f---in dude in a cave, gimme a break please would some UFO come down and straighten this human race out, even if you gotta devour us."
"Do not turn the man into a martyr," Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong tweeted, later adding "this is a global victory."
"Wow Obama 1, 2 punch: lion king video than Osama dead," Fall Out Boy guitarist Pete Wentz said on his Twitter. "Seriously I wanna see who runs in 2012..."
"Ding Dong the witch is dead!!" Flaming Lips singer, and avowed 'Wizard of Oz' fan, Wayne Coyne quipped. "Which ole witch?? The wicked witch!!! Ding Dong the wicked witch is DEAD!!!"
"A moment in the kitchen; remembering those who died on Sept. 11 & not taking any joy in the news," Amanda Palmer wrote early Monday morning.
Metric wrote: "Ok, two things: Osama Bin Laden is dead?" "And tame impala is covering Massive Attack. Remember the innocent 1990s?"
Moby, who was living near ground zero at the time of the September 11 attacks, summed up a lot of people's reactions with a succinct tweet: "Whoa."

Green Day Tap Tom Hanks for 'American Idiot' Movie @ Spin: here
With Green Day's American Idiot musical set to close on Broadway on April 24, the punk trio will begin working on a movie adaptation of the 2004 concept album, and they have tapped a Hollywood A-lister to produce it: Tom Hanks.
According to Reuters, the actor will work with director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) on the adaptation, which will be co-produced by members of Green Day. Universal studios is in negotiations put out the movie, which doesn't have a production schedule or release date, and Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for writing Milk, is the frontrunner to pen the screenplay.
News about Hanks' involvement first leaked out in January, when it was rumored that Hanks' Playtone production company was interested in working on the American Idiot adaptation. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong also revealed that he would most likely play the role of St. Jimmy. "I think that's a no-brainer," he said.
Hanks' involvement in a rock movie makes sense. He was a producer of Neil Young's 2006 doc Heart of Gold and he executive produced the televised version of the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert in 2009 and the smash movie Mamma Mia! in 2008. He also directed the 1996 rock-based drama That Thing You Do!
Green Day's American Idiot, the rock opera based on the band's album of the same name, will stage its final Broadway performance on April 24 in New York, but it looks like the story may move to the big screen once the stage curtains close.
The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Universal is negotiating the screen rights to American Idiot, and carrying over the show's director, Michael Mayer. Apparently screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (he won an Oscar for Milk) and Tom Hanks are also in the project's gravitational pull (Hanks would be involved in some kind of production capacity and probably not playing St. Jimmy, the show's nefarious dealer/guest-star magnet).
Which brings us to the next point: There are plenty of issues in translating splashy stage musicals into compelling films-you need look no further than 2008's Mamma Mia! for proof-but the biggest sticking point in making a movie out of American Idiot will be finding a suitable performer to play the lead role.
Celebrity cameos in the St. Jimmy role from Melissa Etheridge, AFI's Davey Havok and Billie Joe Armstrong himself aside, the Broadway cast is largely made up of stage vets like Van Hughes (Hairspray, 9 to 5) , David Larsen (Good Vibrations), Rebecca Naomi Jones (Passing Strange). Also, Justin Guarani. Yes, that one.
Who would you like to see reprise their roles onscreen, AmIdios? Original Johnny (and Tony-winning Spring Awakening alum) John Gallagher Jr.? Original Jimmy Tony Vincent? Or are there better-known TV or film actors with the singing and dancing Broadway-baby chops to fill those roles-and the celebrity draw to fill cineplex seats?
Tuesday, April 19th, 2011Billie Joe Armstrong talks to Details about Broadway, Sarah Palin and stealing a limo from Letterman
Billie Joe Armstrong went from hard-partying troublemaker to Broadway headliner, but don't tell the 39-year-old Green Day front man that he's punked out!
Q&A
DETAILS: You've said that, prior to recording the album American Idiot, you came to New York and did a lot of partying. Did you think about that while playing the drug-pushing character St. Jimmy? Billie Joe Armstrong: That's more the main character, Johnny-going from being a big fish in a small pond to swimming with sharks. I had a tendency in my past to get caught up in partying too much or making bad decisions. Stealing a limo from David Letterman during the Insomniac tour - I got into a little bit of trouble. In 2003, I ended up in jail with a DUI, and I definitely regret that.
On the risk of being too political: "It dawned on me at the end of the last tour that things had become heavy. It's a f**king balancing act, man. And you don't want to always write about politics just for the sake of writing about politics. I don't want to become Rage Against the Machine. Bono is having lunch with George Bush to get money from him. I don't operate that way. I stick to my opinions."
On today's political climate: "The Democrats are a bunch of f**king pussies. It was so smart for the Republicans to embrace the Tea Party: 'We don't believe everything you say, but we'll listen to you.' I get more confused every day. Then I feel like I'm not doing enough. It starts to make my head explode. Maybe I should go talk to the troops in Afghanistan."
On Sarah Palin: "I listen to the shit that comes out of her mouth, and I'm just in awe. These are Sunday-school teachers becoming politicians. Mike Huckabee? He's the guy that diddled you while holding the Bible. He's so soft-spoken, so Mr. Rogers. Palin is the same-it's this sneaky way to make Americans feel comfortable, but you know they're rotten to the core."
Tuesday, April 12th, 2011Billie Joe Armstrong J-180 More @ Gibson: Here!
Teenage pop-punk group Emily's Army is gearing up for the release of their full-length debut, Don't Be A Dick, due June 14 on Adeline Records. Produced by Billie Joe Armstrong, the album features heartfelt teenage anthems dealing in cautionary tales, politics and the pressures of adolescence. The record will be available digitally as well as on vinyl.
The 14-song set was recorded and mixed in four days at Oakland's Jingletown Recordings with the help of engineer Chris Dugan. Emily's Army counts the rich East Bay music scene and Gilman Street amongst their influences, along with classic power pop, and garage rock.
Emily's Army consists of prolific songwriting brothers Max and Cole Becker, guitarist Travis Neumann and drummer Joey Armstrong. At the ripe age of 15, 16 and 17 years old, the Oakland-based band has already spent two years touring up and down the West Coast.
The band takes its name from Max and Cole's 15 year-old cousin Emily, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis in 1998 and has suffered from the disease her entire life. In tribute, the band adopted the name Emily's Army, which also happens to be the moniker for a fundraising organization in their cousin's honor.

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011Green Day Premiere 'Awesome' Performance of 'Holiday' -- Exclusive Video
After showcasing their incredible live act on 2005's 'Bullet in a Bible' album, Green Day are dropping a new live set that features the best performances from their '21st Century Breakdown Tour' in 2009. The new album, 'Awesome as F---,' will be released March 22 via Reprise and features performances of such hits as '21 Guns,' 'American Idiot' and 'When I Come Around.'
To give fans a taste of what they can find on the CD/DVD, Billie Joe Armstrong and company have released a clip of the band performing 'Holiday' in Tokyo. "Do you want to start a f---ing war?" Armstrong yells at the start of the anthem, which appeared on 2004's 'American Idiot' LP. Check out the energetic performance below.
Macbeth, a Carlsbad, CA-based footwear, apparel, and accessory lifestyle brand, is proud to announce its third Studio Project collaboration with Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt.
Dirnt has been rocking crowds around the world with his band, Green Day, since 1987. With the release of the epic, award-winning album "Dookie" in 1994, Green Day became one of the first punk rock bands to capture the attention of the mainstream, and 2004's "American Idiot" was an international sensation, selling over 15 million copies worldwide, winning multiple Grammy Awards and spawning a Broadway musical.
This third Studio Project from Dirnt will accompany Macbeth's Spring 2011 Collection, and like Dirnt's past collaborations, this one is also fully vegan. Dirnt chose to outfit Macbeth's existing silhouette, The Schubert, in a rugged military green upper, comprised of organic cotton, PET (recycled plastic fibers) and a recycled polyester woven material, while the black outsole consists of recycled rubber components from tires. Additionally, the adhesive is a water-based, synthetic, vegan glue.
Dirnt has chosen to donate his royalties from the collaboration to The National Military Family Association's Operation Purple, a program created to empower military children and their families to develop and maintain healthy and connected relationships, in spite of the current military environment. Created in 2004 to fill a need identified by military parents to help them help their kids, Operation Purple periodically sponsors camps that provide military kids with an opportunity to have fun and make friends in an environment where they are reminded that they are our nation's youngest heroes.
"I'm really excited to be teaming up with Macbeth for another Studio Project," explains Dirnt. "Macbeth is a great company, producing quality product in a conscious way, and I'm always happy to find a way to lend a hand to great programs like Operation Purple."

Sunday, February 13th, 2011Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day win musical show Grammy for 'American Idiot' album
"American Idiot," the jukebox rock musical featuring songs by Green Day, is now a Grammy winner.
Billie Joe Armstrong and Green Day won the 2010 Grammy Award for musical show album for the musical, which opened in April at the St. James Theatre in New York.
The other nominees in the category were "Sondheim on Sondheim," "A Little Night Music," "Fela!" and "Promises, Promises."
Armstrong wasn't in Los Angeles to accept the award since he is currently playing the role of St. Jimmy in "American Idiot" on Broadway.
The "American Idiot" album was released by Reprise. The musical uses songs from Green Day's albums "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown," both of which won Grammy awards in 2005 and 2010, respectively.
Armstrong will be performing in the Broadway production through Feb. 27. A national tour of "American Idiot" is in the works, with a start date expected in the fall.

Billie Joe Armstrong plays many roles in "American Idiot," and that's before he even takes the stage at the St. James Theater. Mr. Armstrong, the 38-year-old Green Day front man and guitarist and a co-writer of that Broadway musical adapted from his band's hit album of the same title, rejoined the show on Jan. 1 to resume the role of St. Jimmy, the pugnacious, drug-pushing alter ego of the protagonist, Johnny (portrayed by John Gallagher Jr.). (Charles Isherwood's review of Mr. Armstrong in "American Idiot" appears in Monday's New York Times.)
But in the final minutes before showtime on Friday night, Mr. Armstrong took on other parts - from a nervous neophyte gingerly reviewing his notes from Michael Mayer, the musical's director and co-writer, to an extroverted jester prancing around the stage in a female co-star's sequined dress.
In his dressing room - furnished with the record albums of vintage punk acts like the Avengers and Generation X, and dried-out bouquets suspended from the ceiling by their stems - Mr. Armstrong spoke with ArtsBeat about his experience as a performer in "American Idiot" and about what the future might hold when he leaves the show after Feb. 27. These are excerpts from that conversation.
Q. So what notes does Michael have for you tonight? A. He told me I was flat. [laughs] That's his job.
Q. Yikes. Sounds like someone's going to wake up tomorrow with a broken guitar in his bed. A. He goes over it every night. I've got a good rapport with him, so it's cool. In this situation I have no choice. I'm a rookie. I even have a hat that someone gave me that says "rookie" on it. When you get older, it's good to feel like you're getting into uncharted territory.
Rock star impersonators are not exactly rare creatures on Broadway today. An imitation Elvis and Jerry Lee and friends are stirring up trouble in "Million Dollar Quartet" at the Nederlander Theater. Flesh facsimiles of Paul, John, George and Ringo are running through the Beatles' greatest hits nightly in "Rain" at the Neil Simon.
But if you're looking for the actual article, there is only St. Jimmy at the St. James. Billie Joe Armstrong, the Green Day frontman with the antic aspect of a rabid raccoon, has rejoined the cast of "American Idiot" for a few weeks, bringing a jolt of authentic rock-god electricity to a musical that was plenty electrified - and electrifying - to start with.
The most notable, and commendable, aspect of Mr. Armstrong's performance as the drug pusher St. Jimmy is how notable it is not, in a fundamental sense. Although ripples of excitement spread through the audience in the moments before his entrance, and the raucous cheers of fans rise when he comes slamming onto the stage, Mr. Armstrong is not merely strutting around spreading stardust. (His arrival will no doubt goose the box office considerably, as it did when he first joined the show for several performances in the fall.)
Certainly he brings his own style and charisma to bear on the role, as any actor would. But at no point does Mr. Armstrong indulge in extraneous audience pandering or self-indulgent showboating. "American Idiot" is an ensemble show, an aching portrait of disaffected youth in search of itself. Mr. Armstrong, who wrote the songs (with Green Day) and wrote the book with the director, Michael Mayer, naturally has a stake in maintaining its integrity. He's not here to undermine it with focus-pulling grandstanding, and he doesn't. He plays the role, and plays it very well. (Mr. Armstrong is appearing in selected performances through Feb. 27.)

Mike Dirnt's side band, The Frustrators are back in the studio! Stay tuned for performances in California!
Monday, January 3rd, 2011Green Day To Drop Awesome Live Album/DVD In March
While a track list isn't available, band has hinted that 'Cigarettes and Valentines' could make the cut.
For years now, Green Day have made a point of turning their live shows into all-out arena-rock events, complete with gratuitous pyro, even more gratuitous stage props (T-shirt launchers, toilet-paper guns, water cannons, etc.), and, of course, some good-old-fashioned crowd participation
And now, they're packaging all that madness for the masses, with the appropriately titled Awesome as F---, a live CD/DVD set to hit stores March 15.
That's according to a spokesperson for their label, Reprise Records, though eagle-eyed fans probably could have guessed something was in the works as far back as August, when the band took to their Twitter account to announce, "We've been recording our live shows since the beginning of tour. Possible live album coming. A ton of songs!"
In other tweets, they encouraged fans to bring "Awesome as F---" signs to shows and even hinted that a version of "Cigarettes and Valentines" - a song from their now-legendary scrapped album that pre-dated American Idiot, which they performed live for the first time during an August show in Denver - would appear on the album.
Awesome as F--- is already listed on Amazon.com as a two-disc set. At press time, a track list for the album was not available. Green Day's last live album was 2005's Bullet in a Bible, recorded at the Milton Keynes National Bowl in England. Last year, they also released a mini live set, Last Night on Earth, taken from a performance in Tokyo.
